LOT 934
Grade 1 winner GITANE DU BERLAIS sells to Peter Molony for €220,000

Having been outbid on MA FILLEULE, Peter Molony of Rathmore Stud was determined not to let go of GITANE DU BERLAIS (lot 934). The daughter of Balko won the Gr.1 Scilly Isles Novices' Chase in the famous double green colours as well as a pair of Gr.3 events in France and Ireland. A half-sister to Velka Pardubicka hero TZIGANE DU BERLAIS, she is also closely related to top class racemare LET'S DANCE. She was offered carrying her third foal by Martaline.

Those type of mares don't come on the market normally, said Molony, so you have to take the opportunity when it comes along. We've been here for three days and I wanted to buy either her or Ma Filleule. We ended up being underbidder on Ma Filleule so I am delighted to get one of them. She is been bought by a client in the UK to breed to race.

LOT 932
Burke secures star act MA FILLEULE for €220K via Richard Aston

The dispersal of the breeding stock owned in partnership by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede attracted the cream of the Irish, British and French National Hunt breeding industry to Deauville and suddenly the surroundings of the sales ring looked a lot like the Cheltenham parade ring. Warwick Hurdle and Topham Chase scorer MA FILLEULE, who won a total of 8 races and was also placed twice at Grade 1 level, was one of the definite highlights of the 28-strong dispersal consigned by Richard Powell's Haras du Lieu des Champs.

Peter Molony tried to stun the opposition by offering an opening bid of €100,000 but Richard Aston was not to be denied and went to €220,000 to secure the daughter of Turgeon who unfortunately slipped to Martaline this year.

The first thing was to buy her, replied Aston when asked about what attracted her to the beautiful grey. We've admired her for five years probably and never thought we would have the opportunity to own her. The opportunity arose so we dug deep and bought her. It's a definitive project, we want to try and breed something of her looks and ability. It's not a commercial proposition. She's going to breed racehorses we hope, and they will race.

LOT 848
Winning daughter of Princesse D'Anjou brings hammer down at €90,000

Thierry Cyprès has had some year to remember on the track, with his breeding operation having been represented by dual Prix La Haye Jousselin scorer BIPOLAIRE and fellow Auteuil Listed/Group scorers POLIRICO, LOU BUCK'S, ELUDY etc., and he reinvested some of the resulting breeders' premiums in the €90,000 purchase of FELICIE (lot 848). The five-year-old had some big shoes to fill when she was born, being a daughter of Champion National Hunt sire Saint Des Saints out of the diminutive dual Grand Steeple Chase heroine PRINCESSE D'ANJOU. She duly added to the family's credentials, winning over fences at Auteuil and running 4th in the L. Prix Mirror. The Martaline cover she carried around the ring added to her commercial appeal.

Jean-Marie Callier signed the docket on behalf of Cyprès and commented:

Thierry Cypres is always looking at upgrading his broodmare band and this mare ticks a lot of boxes. She is by the best stallion in France, out of a champion racemare and was a good performer herself.

LOT 479
Dubawi Group winner to French-based Czech breeder for €150,000

Leading Czech breeder Jiri Travnicek has been carrying out an extensive renovation at Haras de Beaufay, a historical farm an hour away from Deauville which he purchased some ten years ago, and is now stocking up on quality mares to build a commercial broodmare band. Agent Thomas Janda was on bidding duty and after signing the docket at €40,000 for HOLLY POLLY (lot 462), he upped his game to hold off Helmut von Finck and Larissa Kneip on Wertheimer et Frère's KAPITALE (lot 479) for €150,000. The ten-year-old had a lot running for her as a Dubawi half-sister to triple Group 1 winner KAMSIN, and a Group 3 winner and Group 1 performer in her own right.

Mr. Travnicek has finished renovating his farm in Normandy and he would now like to upgrade his broodmare band, expressed Janda. We tried to buy yesterday but didn't succeed so we are pleased to have been able to buy two today. We like the family of this mare and the fact that she is a Group winner by Dubawi. Her progeny may be destined to be sold so we are looking at commercial pedigrees.

LOT 401
€135,000 Black type producer BARTIRA to join Capucines broodmare band

BARTIRA ticked a lot of boxes for many purchasers as a young, winning daughter of Cape Cross out of Gr.2 German 1,000 Guineas winner BRISEIDA and having already produced a black type performer at 2 in PAPPALINO. This is also the family of TITUS LIVIUS and ZAGORA, which specifically appealed to Eric Puerari who forked out €135,000 for the Haras d'Etreham offering.

She's been bought with our regular partners, explained the Haras des Capucines principal. She is from the family of Zagora, whom we bred, and is a young mare - it's not easy to buy this type of product.

LOT 343
Granddaughter of WURFTAUBE makes €100,000 to support Dschingis Secret

Horst Pudwill's DSCHINGIS SECRET carried all before him in Germany as a four-year-old, winning the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Baden and two more Graded races, and also made an impression in France when taking the Gr.2 Prix Foy at Chantilly from Cloth Of Stars and Talismanic. This year he added the Gr.2 Grosser Handsa Preis to his tally and was recently announced as the newest recruit to the stallion roster of Larissa Kneip's Haras de Saint-Arnoult.

The son of Soldier Hollow looks like he will be getting some proper support from his owner, with his mates set to notably include WALDFEE, a winning daughter of Dansili out of the Gr.2 Diana-Trial runner-up WALDJAGD for which Pudwill and his partners paid €100,000 via agent Chris Richner. Aside from her own racing deeds, WALDJAGD is a daughter of the tap-root mare who has also been responsible for Gr.1 Deutsches Derby scorer WALDPARK and appears as the ancestress of fellow Gr.1 winners WALDGEIST ans MASKED MARVEL.

Foote adds to Cambridge Stud's haul with €90K AUMALE

Already the buyer of four fillies during Saturday's opening session, Australian agent John Foote came back for more on Sunday, extending his shopping list to 6 with the purchase of ILLADORE (lot 247) and AUMALE (lot 366). The latter, offered from the draft of Ecurie des Monceaux, requested a final bid of €90,000. She is a winning daughter of Dansili out of a half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner JUST THE JUDGE, whose Dubawi filly foal sold for €1 million the previous night. All six fillies have been secured on behalf of Brendan and Jo Lindsay's Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.

She is a nice filly who cost a lot as a yearling and traces from a wonderful family. There are a lot of young mares on the page so we can hope for the best with their progeny. Cambridge Stud have been laying out a long term plan to introduce some new blood into their broodmare band and we think the bloodlines we've invested in this week will really suit New Zealand.

I've bought her with my two regular partners, said the Frenchman with a broad smile. We bought four mares tonight and are thrilled with what we got. This mare is an absolute star. I've been following her and wanting to buy her for a long time - it's a dream come true!

LOT 179
Monceaux & partners acquires Group producer KNYAZHNA for €700K

Unraced herself but from the close family of RULE OF LAW and TOMYRIS, Knyazhna was quick to make a name for herself in the breeding shed with her first foal, Siyouni colt SACRED LIFE, landing the Gr.3 Prix Thomas Bryon. Her son's performances duly prompted a return mating to Siyouni and such credentials saw her price soar to €700,000 when offered by Haras de Montaigu.

Henri Bozo of Ecurie des Monceaux signed the docket alongside American breeder Gary Chervenell, who had been on hand in October to see his Camelot yearling colt sell for €280,000 from the Monceaux draft in the same ring.

She is for a partnership between Ecurie des Monceaux, Lordship Stud and Gary Chervenell, commented Bozo. She is a lovely individual and we are very fond of the blood of Montjeu and Kingmambo. Physically she is very easy to mate and obviously the Siyouni cover did no harm!

LOT 175
Dubawi filly foal from Gr.1 winner Just The Judge secured by Godolphin

The first foal out of dual Gr.1 winner Just The Judge, a colt by Dubawi, topped this year's August Yearling Sale at €1.4 million when offered by La Motteraye Consignment on behalf of co-breeders Qatar Racing and China Horse Club, and his full sister all but matched that price tag when commanding €1 million a record price for a foal at ARQANA. Anthony Stroud signed the docket for the February-born filly and commented:

What can you say - there's everything to like about her. She is a beautiful filly with a gorgeous page and has as much potential on the track as in the paddock in the longer term. She will go to the UK and ultimately be trained by one of Godolphin's trainers.

LOT 163
German Group winner PEACE IN MOTION secured by French breeders for €860K

A slick black filly with a panther-like walk and a Group 3 winner out of a great racemare, PEACE IN MOTION turned many heads when walking into the ring. Multiple bidders locked horns until Michel Zerolo and Bertrand Le Métayer were left to do battle against each other, and it took the latter a bid of €860,000 to secure the daughter of Hat Trick.

She is a stunning individual in the old fashion mould, very refined but with lots of size and scope to her. Her pedigree and physique make her very easy to mate and her race record add some guarantees to her potential as a broodmare. She has been bought for some new French breeders and will stay in France to be covered - we haven't decided on a stallion yet.

LOT 160
Japan bound Gr.1 winner LILY'S CANDLE sets new top price at €1.1M

Two-year-old filly LILY'S CANDLE made the headlines on Arc weekend when she inaugurated the colours of American owner Martin Schwartz, who had paid €370,000 for her the night before at the Arc Sale, with a breathtaking victory in the Gr.1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac. Hardly a couple of months later, she was back in the spotlight as part of the Haras des Capucines draft and fell to the sale-topping bid of Emmanuel de Seroux acting on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm.

Her page had benefitted from a tremendous update in between, as her close relative LYS GRACIEUX, took the Queen Elizabeth II Cup Gr.1 at Kyoto.

No decision has been made yet regarding whether she will stay in training or go straight to Japan, said de Seroux. Katsumi loves the family. We bought Liliside here a few years ago and she has now produced Lys Gracieux, and obviously Lily's Candle won the Marcel Boussac so she really is everything we're looking for.

LOT 148
Bozo & O'Connor partner on €1 million 2yo filly SOLAGE

Daughters of Galileo proved one the hottest commodities of the day and the once-raced SOLAGE made no exception when selling for a round million to the bid of Ghislain Bozo and John O'Connor. The half-sister to Gr.3 performer NORMANDY EAGLE is out of a half-sister to PLUMANIA, a Gr.1 winner in the Wertheimer colours, from the family of fellow Gr.1 winners LEFT HAND, GROOM DANCER, FALCO and ABSOLUTELY in Australia. That page coupled with a faultless conformation justified a €700,000 price tag as a yearling and the Nicolas Clément trainee added to her credentials with an eye-catching debut effort when second to MERIMBULA in the coveted Prix de la Chapelle at ParisLongchamp.

We have bought her in partnership with Ecurie des Charmes, commented Ballylinch Stud manager John O'Connor. We have been buying and breeding a few mares together for a few years now and this one really is the type of inviduals we are looking for. She was an expensive yearling and showed a lot of promise as a juvenile so the hope is that she can build up on her debut as a three-year-old. It takes a bit of optimism but this is what drives us forward! No plans have been made yet as to where she will be trained.

LOT 143
La Perelle invests in fresh blood with €510K FANG

Haras de Saint-Pair brought a solid draft to the ring headed by a pair of blue-blooded mares in foal to speedmaster Kodiac. Both commanded prices north of €350,000 and the most coveted of the two proved to be the unraced FANGS, a daughter of Kitten's Joy and full sister to no less than three Stakes winners States side. Ghislain Bozo, sitting alongside Haras de la Pérelle's Jürgen Winter, placed the winning bid of €510,000 and explained:

She is a beautiful mare with a stellar pedigree - she already cost a lot as a yearling. These mares are extremely hard to buy and you need to stretch your limits to take them home - which is exactly what we did! Her cover is attractive too and she will add some speed and precocity to the families of Haras de la Perelle.

A Group 3 winner in her own right and great grand-daughter of Breeders' Cup Turf heroine MISS ALLEGED, carrying her first foal by Muhaarar, ZGHORTA DANCE attracted interest from a wide range of investors. Katsumi Yoshida fought long and hard but shook his head at €550,000 and the hammer fell in favour of Benoit Jeffroy representing Al Shaqab.

She is a beautiful mare, we liked her a lot physically and she is in foal to a promising stallion, said Jeffroy. She will visit Shalaa next year

LOT 135
Clearly added to Australian shopping list for €310K

Stall Salzburg's German Stakes performer CLEARLY is another to be headed to Australia after being knocked down to Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock on behalf of Speriamo Bloodstock. The daughter of Invincible Spirit is a half-sister to Gr.1 Sydney Cup hero POLARISATION, from the close family of Arc winner LAMMTARRA.

She is an outstanding individual from a tremendous family that any breeder would love to have. I have bought her for a new client who is an old friend of mine and operates at Speriamo Bloodstock. We will retire her and take her to Australia where her pedigree will prove very popular - she is a half-sister to a horse who in reality won two Sydney Cups seven days apart and Invincible Spirit has had a resurgence Down Under notably though the deeds of I Am Invincible. Being free of Danehill blood, she should be very easy to mate.

Redvers lands Dubawi mare to support Lion

David Redvers teamed up with Paul Hensey and Julian Dollar to secure LA PATRIA, a Stakes-placed daughter of Dubawi who was offered by Haras de Saint-Pair carrying her second foal by Kodiac. She hails from the dominant family of Gr.1 Preis der Diana victrix ENORA.

She is the best-looking Dubawi mare I have ever seen, enthused Redvers. She is a beautiful individual and a great walker, and we thought she would be a perfect match for Roaring Lion. She's been bought for a three-way partnership between Tweenhills, Rifa Mustang and Newsells Park Studs.

LOT 112
Regally-bred DESERTISTE knocked down to Jeremy Brummitt for €355K

Another gem from the Wertheimer et Frère draft was DESERTISTE,  a Green Desert sister to three Group winners in IMPRESSIONNANTE, herself the dam of INTELLO, dual Gr.1 winning miler MONDIALISTE and Gr.3 winning sprinter ONLY ANSWER. Aged 12, Desertiste has already produced the Gr.3 winning two-year-old SASPARELLA and carried a New Approach cover around the ring.

We only buy mares with long term goals, commented Brummitt, who conducted the bidding alongside Bjorn Nielsen. She comes from a wonderful family that we will be able to breed to a lot of stallions. She has already produced a good filly and we went to the farm to see her Frankel filly foal, which we loved. We think New Approach is a very appropriate mating for her and hopefully she will produce another filly.

Australia calls for Wertheimer homebred TIBERIAS

Australian agent Dean Hawthorne, bidding in company with Grant Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock, had to shell out €450,000 to secure TIBERIAS, a half-sister to Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine SILASOL, from the stellar Wertheimer family of SOLEMIA, SOUSTRACTION, THE GURKHA etc.

She's quality, although she still has a lot of maturing to do, expressed Hawthorne. We like the Galileo blood, we want to accumulate some for the Southern Hemisphere before it's too late! He's a fantastic sire and a fantastic broodmare sire so we're out here searching for them. I bought two today. There's a lot going on in the family and, working as well as it does in the Southern Hemisphere, we're hoping that she'll cross well with our Danehill blood. She goes straight back to Australia and will probably be mated to Fastnet Rock - this is not set in stone though.

Blandford strikes at €330K for Aga Khan filly SHOMARIA

Four years after paying €160,000 for SHEMYA, Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock had to up his game and stretch his budget to €330,000 to secure her three-parts sister SHOMARIA, a daughter of Exceed And Exel out of Gr.3 winner SHEMIMA. A lot has happened in the immediate family in the meantime, with Shemima's 2016 colt by Charm Spirit causing a mighty impression when winning first time out at ParisLongchamp and Shemya's Kingman yearling out of Shemya selling for 1.05 million gns a few weeks ago.

Gr.1 winners SHEMAKA and SHAKEEL also appear on the page.

I know the family well , commented Brown, having bought the half-sister for another client four years ago and she's been extremely good to us. She has some very nice stock coming forward and the two-year-old brother looks like a very serious horse so there really are lots of updates in the family.
I have bought her for an association between two clients and one owns a share in Siyouni, who will suit her very well physically.
